O’Hare International Airport: Public Artwork in Terminal 5

In the bustling corridors of Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, a sweeping narrative of immigration and diversity unfolds across 450 feet of wall space. "a murmuration," conceived by artist Jina Valentine and brought to life by ChiLab Studio, stands as a testament to the power of data visualization in public art

This monumental installation, comprising nearly 600 convex aluminum discs, charts over two centuries of immigration to Illinois through a mesmerizing array of colors and sizes. ChiLab Studio's expertise in advanced fabrication techniques and material science was instrumental in translating Valentine's vision into a durable, visually stunning reality. From the precise manufacturing of zinc-plated steel and anodized aluminum components to the complex installation process in a high-traffic airport environment, ChiLab's team navigated numerous technical challenges. The result is more than just an artwork; it's a living chronicle of Chicago's diverse heritage, inviting millions of travelers to pause and reflect on the rich tapestry of human movement that has shaped the region. In this project, ChiLab Studio once again demonstrated its unique ability to merge artistic vision with engineering precision, creating a piece that is as technically impressive as it is culturally significant.

Concept and Inspiration

Adorning the walls of O'Hare International Airport's Terminal 5, "a murmuration" draws its inspiration from an unexpected source: the ebb and flow of human migration patterns over two centuries. This concept brilliantly ties together Chicago's rich immigration history with a visually captivating architectural element, creating a space that's both informative and deeply meaningful.

Innovative Design Process

Our approach to this project exemplifies ChiLab's commitment to pushing the boundaries of design and fabrication:

  1. Data Visualization: Utilizing census data from 1850 to 2040, we created a visual representation of immigration patterns, translating complex demographic information into an engaging artistic form.

  2. Material Selection: We carefully chose zinc-plated steel and anodized aluminum for their durability and aesthetic qualities, ensuring the installation would withstand the high-traffic airport environment.

  3. Precision Manufacturing: Nearly 600 convex aluminum discs were meticulously crafted, each varying in size and color to represent different immigrant populations and time periods.

  4. Engraving Process: We developed a precise engraving technique for 80 of the discs, incorporating community-contributed phrases that reflect themes of home, welcome, and community in various languages.

  5. Color Coding: A sophisticated color-coding system was implemented, with each disc's hue corresponding to a specific continent of origin, creating a visually striking representation of diversity.

Collaboration and Execution

This project was developed in close collaboration with artist Jina Valentine, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), and the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA). ChiLab's innovative fabrication techniques were essential in bringing Valentine's vision to life. Special thanks to EH Schwab, Pioneer Metal, and Gatto Metal for all the polishing, anodizing, and plating services.

"a murmuration" stands as a testament to ChiLab's ability to bridge the gap between data-driven concept and physical artistry. It demonstrates our capacity to handle large-scale public art installations while maintaining our commitment to precision and meaningful representation. This piece not only serves as a stunning visual focal point but also embodies the spirit of diversity and global connectivity at the heart of Chicago's identity.
