St. Nicholas Church Icon Stands

From the Archive: Process Documentation of Installation(s) at St Nicholas Church, 2022

Icon Pedestal was designed for St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine in Lower Manhattan at the World Trade Center.

In a matching pair, these bronze pedestals were installed in the entryway of the chapel ordained with iconographic tablets for guests to visit before entering.

From left to right:

Slide 1-2: Ben Stagl welding the bronze frame of the pedestal, and awaiting the Pentelic marble top piece.

Slide 3-4: Ally Reza mounting the marble to the pedestal. This particular stone matches that which was used for the facade of the church itself. Mined at the Penteli Marble Quarry just north of Greece's capital, Athens. The same quarry to supply the stone for the Parthenon which sits atop the Acropolis in the capital city. This ancient quarry has been federally protected to exclusively supply stone for the restoration of the Acropolis, with an exception being made for the National Shrine at Ground Zero.  Immortalizing Greece’s historical connection to this site and reinforcing the ways in which contemporary fine art technique intersects with the past, manifesting a future of unity between the two.
